FAQ

Feb 28, 2017

All hail the new FAQ. If you have a general purpose question that is not answered here, please post it in the comments and we'll add it to the FAQ (where appropriated).

Q: When is Thimbleweed Park coming out?
A: Soon! Just kidding. March 30th, 2017

Q: What platforms is it coming out on?
A: Mac, Windows, Linux and Xbox One.

Q: I backed the Kickstarter, what platforms will I get?
A: Backers will get a key for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Q: Do I have to choose Mac, Windows or Linux?
A: No, backers will get all three.

Q: Will I get a key for the XBox?
A: Unfortunately, only the Mac, Windows and Linux platforms are part of the Kickstarter reward.

Q: I want a DRM free version, can I get that?
A: Yes, before the launch date, you will get a email asking if you want Steam or GOG (DRM free).

Q: Where can I buy the game?
A: Initially on Steam, GOG and the Xbox and Microsoft Store. We'll add other places as soon as we can.

Q: Is there Cloud saving?
A: We use Steam Cloud saves for Mac, Windows and Linux, and you can save from the Xbox to the Windows 10 store copy. You can share saves between Mac, Windows and Linux, but you can't share saves between Steam and the Xbox.

Q: Will the game be play anywhere on Windows 10 and Xbox?
A: Yes.  If you bought the game on Xbox or via the Windows 10 Store.

Q; What will the price be?
A: $19.99 USD.

Q: Will you release it on the Playstation and Switch?
A: Hopefully, but we can make no promises now. Once the game is released and we have some free time, we'll look into both of those. Ports take time and money, neither of which we have much of right now.

Q: Will the game be translated?
A: Yes, it will be subtitled in French, German, Spanish and Italian. Russian will follow a few weeks after release and will be a free upgrade.

Q: Is it only English voice?
A: Yes, for now it is only English.

Q. Will there be a boxed version of the game I can purchase?
A. Yes, once the Kickstarter boxes have been sent out, we will be selling an (unsigned) boxed version of the game.

Q: When can I expect my other Kickstarter rewards?
A: Probably a few months after the game releases. We're a small team.

Q: Are you going to open source the game engine?
A: We don't know. If we do, it won't be for several months after the game is released. Open sourcing is not as simple and just releasing a bunch of code, and you'd get to see what a crappy programmer I am.

Q: Help, I'm having issues with my Kickstarter, Humble Bundle or PledgeManger order!
A: Send an email to support [at] thimbleweedpark [dot] com. Don't post questions to the blog.

Q: I really want to buy some Thimbleweed Park t-shirts and mouse pads, where can I get those?
A: Right HERE

I want a FAQ on the FAQ!!

tbmutiny00 - Feb 28, 2017 at 23:34
Will there be a premium package on Steam where we can buy the game+music+pdf?

Zombocast - Feb 28, 2017 at 23:58
Dear TWP, thanks so much for inviting us into your homes, each member of the team has quite a unique desk. I hope the community has treated you well over the last 27 months as it's been a quite an adventure for us all, and not only the point and click variety. Thanks for the blog too, it really feels like a premium content. It served its purpose as being both an archive and keeping its readers and backers engaged throughout the project. We eagerly await the next Neo-Retro game to fall out of the Terrible Toybox.

Guga - Mar 01, 2017 at 01:07
I know about the possibility of fan translations... but will there also the possibility to create fan dubs?

And... I want the engine! I don't care if it's crappy!

Luna - Mar 01, 2017 at 02:16
You are welcome to collect money again for bringing the engine into a state suitable for open source release.

I would certainly back the "weed engine" if you would start a kickstarter "some months after release of the game".

Guga - Mar 01, 2017 at 02:32
I second that. I tried some engines, I even built my own, but I'm sure I could leave everything for the engine used in TWP.

Steffen - Mar 01, 2017 at 10:28
Me too!

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 01, 2017 at 02:18
Hail! This awesome FAQ should be uploaded to GameFAQs.com. :P

Lord Gaga - Mar 01, 2017 at 02:45
Q: I really want to buy some Thimbleweed Park trading cards, where can I get those?

N. Harold Cham - Mar 01, 2017 at 03:02
Right - Jenn, we need more trading cards! Pretty please! :-D

Lluis Casanovas - Mar 01, 2017 at 03:00
I would like to be one tester please !

Lord Gaga - Mar 01, 2017 at 03:46
Q: I want to make sure that I just have superb games on my drive with a Metacritic™ score of at least 85%. So will you provide review codes before release?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 01, 2017 at 03:52
Some questions I have read here and there on previous blog posts (they have already been answered, but it could be useful if they were written with these FAQ):
- Will be possible to use other cloud spaces for savegame files (i.e. Dropbox) ?
- [Are / will be] TWP collectible cards for trade?

Eli - Mar 01, 2017 at 04:10
Q: What is the secret of monkey island ?

Lord Gaga - Mar 01, 2017 at 04:22
41

Mr. Stuff - Mar 02, 2017 at 23:20
LeChuck's hidden underground lair on Monkey Island. The long-running 'mystery' is just Ron's poking fun at those who haven't figured it out.

Martin Wendt - Mar 01, 2017 at 04:26
About open sourcing the engine: that would be almost unheard of and I would highly appreciate that, of course (not matter when).
I saw your assembler coding style alot and from there you have nothing to hide (well style-wise maybe but not efficiency wise ;-)
The fact that you decide to write the engine yourself including all annoying stuff (you mentioned things like language changes affecting things currently on-screen and all those non-essential boring coding tasks).
THAT is what I consider almost equally cool today than the plot of TWP I have seen so far. I think this is what Kickstarter was intended for (in my opinion). Do what you like not what is the most reasonable thing to do ;-)
I guess the books and answering machines messages would never have passed otherwise!
All glory to the TWP toads on this one.
Cheers to you, I lift my still-too-full cup of morning-coffee to you TWP team!

Someone - Mar 01, 2017 at 04:54
It wasn't only Ron's code. :)

Gabarts - Mar 01, 2017 at 05:02
Open source the engine?! WOW...

Thimbleweedster - Mar 01, 2017 at 06:04
@Ron:

I actually would like to see what exactly your shit tier level, regarding programming, is :)) . On a level scale from LV1 to LV99, how do you rate yourself?

Thimbleweedster - Mar 01, 2017 at 06:34
Open spaghetti source code with meat balls and diet coke - yum! Where can I redeem my voucher?

Thimbleweedster - Mar 01, 2017 at 07:01
Gott ist tot.

Nor Treblig - Mar 01, 2017 at 18:44
Nach ihm wird nicht mehr gesucht

Thimbleweedster - Mar 01, 2017 at 07:21
Und schmeckt sehr, sehr gut.

Big Red Button - Mar 01, 2017 at 09:05
Will the package of the boxed edition be localized?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 01, 2017 at 09:38
Traditionally, it should be.

Big Red Button - Mar 01, 2017 at 10:12
That's true. That's the reason why I asked. But, I would totally understand if it wasn't, seeing the costs. Also, the overall impression would be equal.

Tobias R. - Mar 01, 2017 at 11:20
I hope not!!!

Paul - Mar 01, 2017 at 10:23
I had a dream that I played Thimbleweed Park and it turned out that every puzzle was a sliding-tile picture puzzle (where you slide the tiles to rearrange a picture correctly).
Can I have the team's word and reassurance, as honorable men and women, that not all the puzzles in Thumbleweed Park are sliding-tile picture puzzles?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 01, 2017 at 10:27
None of the puzzles in Thimbleweed Park are sliding picture puzzles. Those aren't adventure game puzzles.

Jan_W - Mar 02, 2017 at 11:57
Thanks for saying that. I have a strong feeling that TWP will be exactly what I hoped it would be!

Mister T - Mar 21, 2017 at 11:01
That reminds me how I wanted to try out a Tex Murphy game and lost interest during some Sliding Tile puzzle. I filed it under "garbage" in my Steam library and never went back...

Gabarts - Mar 01, 2017 at 11:10
That Thumbleweed Park typing mistake made me laugh... :)
@Paul
Maybe you played too much sliding puzzles on your mobile :)

Paul - Mar 01, 2017 at 11:35
"Thumbleweed Park" is my hastily-constructed rip-off game that will be in the app store soon... it's made to cash-in on the success of Thimbleweed Park. It's all just sliding picture puzzles of characters that look a lot like Thimbleweed Park characters, but different enough to avoid litigation.
It has pictures of Hansome the Sweary Model Clown, CIA agents Jay and Jeyes, etc.

Nor Treblig - Mar 01, 2017 at 18:45
:D

You should also place the tiles just randomly instead of shuffling them properly. Makes it more fun that way.

Paul - Mar 01, 2017 at 12:09
It would have been awesome if there would have been a Kickstarter Box variant, but costs must be prohibitive. Can't wait to play this!

entropy - Mar 01, 2017 at 13:48
I would explicitly state that the Steam cloud saves are working cross platform (Thanks again for that). :)
That's imho a great thing that most (from my experience) Steam games don't feature.
In some cases they even clobbered the existing save game(s) when switching the platform.
(Hint: Not funny)

Ron Gilbert - Mar 01, 2017 at 13:53
Well, Steams cloud saves are pretty basic, there isn't much the game can do to ensure that it doesn't blow data away.  That's all under Steam's control.  Basically, newer file wins.  If you do stuff while off line, it might not sync correctly, or if you save over a slot with a stupid game state, it's going to sync it and blow away the others.  Thimbleweed park has a 9 slot save system, much like the old games.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 01, 2017 at 14:19
...with the difference that, this time, you don't need to turn a floppy disk over, or to pick up a new formatted one!

Firebird - Mar 01, 2017 at 16:33
Oh no! Please don't give us only 9 save slots!
This feels too much like an 80's constraint.
Especially as a former beta tester for some german adventures (from House of Tales) I am used to save my progress often and it makes me sad, when the number of saves is restricted to such a small number.
Mainly I use them after completing a game to replay some scenes or to try new paths.
Manually fiddeling with save games, just to get back to an earlier scene doesn't feel comfortable anymore.
It would be great if the number of saves could be increased somehow.

Otherwise: I am excited about the game and it looks really great!

Andy Hall - Mar 01, 2017 at 14:15
What are the minimum specs for each platform?

Big Red Button - Mar 01, 2017 at 15:26
This was recently discussed. Officially, the game needs 4 GB of RAM on Win, MacOS and Linux. It may run on smaller RAM sizes as well, but the absolute minimum hasn't been tested. Anyway, the game requires a certain amount of RAM. Maybe the ports for Android and iOS will be optimized for lower specifications.

In terms of the Windows version, Ron wrote:
"The official min spec is windows 7, but the game runs fine on Vista with a filly patch version and dx11 installed. The reason we don't say Vista is that is has to be fully patched with current drivers and that's not true for a lot of people."

Brian Bagnall - Mar 01, 2017 at 15:20
Day 1 of the wait is almost over. Only 29 more to go.

Tim Lammert - Mar 01, 2017 at 15:44
Codes for all three, Mac, Win&Linux? Awesome, wasn´t expecting that.
But that doesn´t help, to persuade people to buy ten copies :)
Can´t wait for the boxed version coming to stores. I felt the KS one was to expensive. Now I regret

Brian Small - Mar 01, 2017 at 16:08
Steam and GOG each provide all supported OS'es with just one key.

BoTToX - Mar 02, 2017 at 15:12
Yep, i hope this is the same boxed version than KS one, but just unsigned.

BoTToX - Mar 02, 2017 at 15:19
I hope it's not just a stupid plastic Dvd box ; )

longuist - Mar 01, 2017 at 16:03
Will there be an achievement for completing the game on every platform? Oh my, what a stupid question..

Victor - Mar 01, 2017 at 16:07
Hi ron, hi all TWP team.
Have you made a rough estimation on how long will it take to finish the game?
There are different endings?
Thanks!
Victor

Zombocast - Mar 01, 2017 at 23:34
I'd like to hear about captain Steve Kirk, sexy Riker, and the late commander Spock.
*Steve Kirk directed the thimbleweed soundtrack

Peca - Mar 02, 2017 at 09:40
When do you expect to release Android version of the game?
Btw. I played Maniac Mansion on C=64 :-)

BoTToX - Mar 02, 2017 at 15:10
The no KS boxed version is the same as the KS version but just unsigned ?

Idracab - Mar 02, 2017 at 16:09
The final Kickstarter stretch goal reached in the last moments of the campaigns was the iOS and Android version. What's the plan and timeline for porting and releasing on these platforms?

DZ-Jay - Mar 04, 2017 at 14:13
Q. My Humble Bundle reward (sorry, I missed the Kickstarter campaign!) includes a boxed copy.  Is there a release date for these?
A. Yes, we will travel back in time and send it to you before actually finishing the game.  Check your desk drawer.

Q. OMG!!! How did you do that?
A. We won't tell you, and you can't make us.

DZ-Jay - Mar 08, 2017 at 05:37
By the way, that first question there was sincere... is there a release date for the boxed copies, or is it assumed that it will be released at the same time as the Steam/GoG digital downloads?

Meggsie - Mar 05, 2017 at 17:16
I might have to buy a computer just to play this game.

Jeremy - Mar 06, 2017 at 10:50
Hooray for this amazing game!  Some of my fondest memories are of playing Maniac Mansion and Zak as a kid.
I googled Maniac Mansion out of nostalgia this morning and stumbled upon this game, only a month before the release!

Devin - Mar 07, 2017 at 11:21
HI I was wondering if this game is going to be a xbox play anywhere title, as I see you mention cross save between windows 10 and xbox?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 07, 2017 at 11:28
Just added that to the FAQ.

devin herritt - Mar 07, 2017 at 11:36
thanks makes my decision much easier to buy using that as I play quite a bit on a laptop as well as my xbox

wossName - Mar 08, 2017 at 09:18
Are you planning to do another game with Gary and David, including standup meeting podcasts? I find them very relaxing to listen to.

PlinyTheElder - Mar 08, 2017 at 12:18
Will you enable GOG connect to allow us to get a steam key then also get the game at GOG. This would be amazing if you do as would becbest of both having steam features and a drm free copy for future.

mouseem - Mar 14, 2017 at 06:48
Can I play the game in English, even if my computer/phone OS is set to German? PLEASE!!!

Nor Treblig - Mar 14, 2017 at 19:02
You should be able to select every language combination of voices and subtitles you like. Only thing you cannot do (anymore :-) is turning both off.

Note that there will be only English voices available (unless fans make more).

mouseem - Mar 15, 2017 at 11:55
Thanks, that would have been the only thing that would have ruined it for me. I love to play games in their original language.

shibola - Mar 18, 2017 at 15:36
I ordered the digital game plus guilt relieve package and would, when the email comes (btw when does it come?) opt for a steam key. My question is: is this a steamkey that unlocks multiple OS to my steam account (win and mac version of the game) so it would be possible for me to register this game to my steam account, play on win10 and later go to a friend which has a mac, login my steam account on his machine and be able to download the game and play there aswell while im there? also i think you mentioned that in a podcast but im not sure anymore: are there multiple savegames (so i play alone and later start new with the friend but can go back to my old game i started alone) and are they steam sync and would the mac save also be synced?
thank you, i really enjoy the podcast sessions (im a bit late though, listening to ep47 now) and plan to read through the blog archive later on aswell.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 18, 2017 at 15:42
Your Steam key will unlock Mac, Windows and Linux versions and uses cross platform cloud saves, so you will be able to do what you describe above.  There are multiple savegames, so you can keep multiple games going at the same time.

shibola - Mar 18, 2017 at 16:02
wow, thanks for the fast answer. so this email asking for gog or steam did not get lost somewhere in my filters but comes in the next week or so?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 18, 2017 at 16:05
Correct, nothing has been sent you yet.

Laura - Mar 24, 2017 at 09:26
Hey when will the game be available on iOS? :)

mr. T - Mar 27, 2017 at 11:15
Hi! Does the retail version include guilt absolution for pirating Monkey Island / Maniac Mansion? Asking for a friend.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 29, 2017 at 04:29
The guilt absolution, on Kickstarter, costed $25. So, buying Thimbleweed Park, you implicitily have 4/5 of absolution...

mr. T - Apr 01, 2017 at 09:42
That would make sense. That's ok though, my friend will keep supporting until full absolution is accomplished!

Womp - Mar 30, 2017 at 07:30
Can someone please change the date from "30th March" to "today"? :)

pst - Mar 30, 2017 at 17:46
Will the game be translated into Polish?

tom - Mar 30, 2017 at 18:19
when is an iOS version coming?

Z - Apr 01, 2017 at 11:23
I wonder if the game content is suitable for children.

Alberto Milone - Apr 01, 2017 at 13:54
Hi, does anybody know where the savegames are stored on Linux (I bought the game on GOG)?

Ron Gilbert - Apr 01, 2017 at 13:55
~/.local/share/Terrible Toybox/Thimbleweed Park

Alberto Milone - Apr 01, 2017 at 18:46
Thank you very much for getting back to me, and for all the great games I grew up with back in the '80s-'90s :)

Kisai - Apr 03, 2017 at 19:01
I'm fairly impressed with the performance of the game engine. I hope you do open-source at least the game engine itself so that other developers who want to make a similar styled game can see you don't need Unity to make a pretty pixel art game. You should try to get it on iOS, PS4, Nintendo Switch first however since once that genie is let out of the bottle, it will never go back in.

And don't worry about code looking less than perfect, that's generally the point of open sourcing is to clean up and make it more portable.

Malyfsborin88 - Apr 03, 2017 at 20:35
On Google and Wiki it says TWP was also released for Android but I don't see it anywhere in the Play Store?

Ron Gilbert - Apr 03, 2017 at 20:39
They are wrong. It will be a few months before the mobile versions are out.

Andrea - Apr 04, 2017 at 07:29
Ahm...ok: waited and waited years for another game from you guys, got the news, literally dreamt about playing it,  bought by win 10 for my xbox one (which is sitting at home), set up a morning of build tests at work so that I could pretend monitoring while I would spend all day playing it....and I can't find a way to download it on win 10 to play it somewhere (subset of 'play anywhere' I fathomed..).
Am I the dumbest microsoft developer ever?
PLEASE HELP ME, I  WAITED YEARS AND I NEED MY FIX JACK!!
..well, I mean, mr. Ron, sir..

Ron Gilbert - Apr 04, 2017 at 11:34
As the web site says, the win10 play anywhere version is a few weeks out. Contract [email protected] is you have any other questions.

Andrea - Apr 05, 2017 at 05:44
Thank you, I missed that part!!
(man, you answering directly is so cool. I have admired your work, and your humour, for 25yrs and counting...I actually learnt English just to understand the insults ^_^ So...thanks, again.)

TheRealWanderer - Apr 05, 2017 at 08:11
I´m still waiting for the c64 Version ;)

jackwallace - Apr 06, 2017 at 02:34
Hi, I am sorry if this has been asked before but I realized that I couldn't read all the comments on the "Options" posting for fear of spoilers. I read something about a patch but also someone mentioned re-downloading the game. In the "Options" posting Ron commented about a bug (I am not going to repeat what was about as I don't want to spoil it for someone else as it was for me!) and when I saw the little spoilers that is when I stopped reading.

Does this affect me? I have downloaded it from GOG on release day and I just started Part 3. Do I need to do anything? I was planning a weekend of playing like old times and it would suck getting stuck somewhere for any reason other than me playing the game like a dairy farmer.

By the way, I am loving it until now, you succeeded in recreating that fantastic feeling. So often revisiting the past is disappointing but not this time - well done team TWP!

jackwallace - Apr 06, 2017 at 02:36
Forgot to say that I am playing it on Mac, not sure if that is relevant

Nor Treblig - Apr 06, 2017 at 03:28
Just download and install the current version from GOG (.858) over your current installed one. It fixes most game breaking bugs.
Alternatively you can use GOG Galaxy to keep games automatically up-to-date similar to Steam.

Matthias - Apr 06, 2017 at 11:12
Bought on App Store - is not working at Mac 10.6.8.
The App Store says it should run at Mac 10.6.6 and later.

I desperatly want to play it ;-)
Am I the only one with this problem?
Thankx for any kind of help!

Ron Gilbert - Apr 06, 2017 at 11:32
The game requires 10.7.  There is a super hidden place where you set it, and I missed it. The new patch going up today has the correct information about min OS.

Although this doesn't solve your problem.

Tommy - Apr 08, 2017 at 05:40
Man I really, really like this game. Im not a backer but I regret it. It seems like being part of the process has a certain value and I would love a sequel (via kickstarter).
I was wondering when we can expect to hear som (hopefully good) news about how the game has sold. I know its early but I'm really hoping for a sequal. Would that be easyer/faster now that you already made the game engine?
I bought the game on xbox one (works fine on a console) and I would like to buy (if its cheap) the digital kasset cover so I can print that out for display in my dedicated videogame room.

As I said, the game is *bleeping* awesome and it's not the nostalgia talking. I haven't finished it jet but I still want more :(

Nor Treblig - Apr 08, 2017 at 16:03
In a podcast Ron said since having an engine and workflows in place they could create a new game faster (e.g. one every two years sounds feasible). Assuming these games (starting with TWP) can cover the costs. He isn't keen on doing another Kickstarter.

The covers are included in the soundtrack for >= $10:
https://thimbleweedpark.bandcamp.com/album/thimbleweed-park-original-soundtrack

Benni - Apr 08, 2017 at 13:29
I bought the AppStore Version and wonder if there is iCloud SaveGame sync... Because i want to use iMac and MacBook...

and many thanx for the Game :)

Ron Gilbert - Apr 08, 2017 at 13:36
There is no cloud saves in the App Store version. Apple method for cloud saving is crazy complex, with Steam, I don't even have to write one line of code. If I do cloud saves in iOS port, I might back port that to Mac.

TWP on Raspberry Pi - Apr 16, 2017 at 17:18
Does anyone know if/how to get TWP running on RPI / RetroPie? Would be really awesome -  Thanks!

Big Red Button - Apr 25, 2017 at 08:38
An RPi version hasn't been announced yet. But, according to Ron, there is a chance for a build for the RPi when they release the versions for Android and iOS.
See Ron's comment here: https://blog.thimbleweedpark.com/soon_is_soon

DragonNinja - Apr 19, 2017 at 20:34
What is the flash of bars that occurs in the game say? It always goes by to quick to read. It's subliminal I know but what does it say anyway?

Marcel - Apr 20, 2017 at 09:15
Hey Guys,

any idea or estimation when this awesome game will be released on Windows store? Need PlayAnywhere during my vacation :)

Thanks!

Ivek - Apr 30, 2017 at 09:23
Ipad touch version ever coming?

Indybcn - May 01, 2017 at 01:17
Yep, wanna know that too!

Jens - May 03, 2017 at 15:03
Will there be a Nintendo Switch version? Pleeeeease...
